    What Makes a Hero…Compassion
Compassion is the next trait we look at in our series. Compassion is defined as, "to recognize the suffering of others, then take action to help". Lisa takes us through 1 John 3:16-20 to illustrate what compassion looks like in the New Testament. The passage tells us to not only tell our brothers and sisters in Christ that we love them, but also, let our actions communicate that we love them. "Dear children, let's not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions" (1 Jn 3:18). Compassion should drive us to action, it speaks the Gospel without words and translates our beliefs and values to our culture.

Faith in Balance is Love in Action- James 2
Have you ever been misjudged, prejudged, discriminated against?  Or have you ever done the same to another?  Of course we have.  But God's Word has some clear directives for us if we think it's OK.  We all fall under the judgment of God, and yet He envelopes us with His mercy.  Mercy is love in action.  When we look at others who look, think or speak differently than us, what is our response, and what are we demonstrating about ourselves by our response?

    Exploring the Psalms- Refuge

Where do we turn when life is pressing in or crashing down around us? Over and again the psalmists looked up to God. However, seeking refuge is really more about seeing who God is and what He is doing, and what He is capable of doing. This message looks at the words of David in Psalm 62 and reminds us that no matter the storm, God is our refuge.

    Responding to Suffering/Finding Perspective
Going through life's struggles is difficult, but when we can find perspective and maintain our bearings, we can more clearly see what God is capable of accomplishing and the peace that He can provide through the process.

    Stay on Target!- Hebrews 12:1-3
Suffering with your eyes on God gives meaning, purpose, hope and blessing. This morning we look at the examples of Jesus and Moses.

Why is there so much suffering?
Probably one of the most long-standing objections to faith in God is, "If God is good and all-powerful, then why is there so much suffering in the world?"  Excellent question and legitimate concern.  However, where does a persons concern for compassion and justice actually come from?  Suffering actually makes a case for the existence and goodness of God.

    The Bigger Picture
Finding a greater purpose and meaning in the struggles that stare us in the face can be one of life's greatest challenges.  Jesus had purpose in fulfilling His mission in all that He said and did, as we see in the story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead in John 11.  Opportunities to see and experience the glory of God are all around us if we keep our eyes on Jesus.

    Walk in the Light
When the lights go out and we are surrounded by darkness, our inclination is to reach for the light.  We live in a dark world and the light switch is in our walk with the Lord.  Is the light that we emanate lovingly reflecting the holiness of Jesus or is it blinding the eyes of those who need help, not hypocrisy?  In a dark world, we are called to walk in the light.
