Exploring the Psalms- Introduction

“Most of Scripture speaks to us, but the Psalms speak for us.” Athanasius, ancient Church Father, spoke those words over 1600 years ago, and they still ring true today. The depth of emotion, from joy to sorrow, fear and anger, hope to despair…it’s all in there. Today we begin a series for the summer looking at some of the themes of the Psalms and how they give voice to our deepest thoughts and feelings, as God desires that we get real with Him and with each other in our pursuit of the One the Psalms point to, Jesus.

Today we walk through a review of who we are as new creations in Christ, created in the image of God, forgiven, adopted, not the sum of our mistakes, followers of Jesus, servants of Christ and citizens of heaven.

    Servant of Christ- Romans 1:1
"What do I look like? Your servant?"  Ever heard that one?  Or better yet, have you ever said it?  Servanthood often gets a bad rap in our culture.  However, servanthood in the 1st century was a bit different, and to be a servant in Christ's Kingdom is the greatest position of all.  We are servants of Christ.  Today we take a closer look at what that means.

What does it mean to be a "Child of the Father"?  Is it about what we are to inherit as we are co-heirs with Christ?  It is about how close of a relationship we can have with Him? Or is it about identifying ourselves as a child of God and then acting like it?  Take your pick!  Or better yet, take all three.

I am a Follower of Jesus- Matthew 4:18-25
Do we follow Jesus like the world follows celebrities on Twitter, checking in once in a while with what He may have on His mind?  Or do we follow Him at the level that Jesus gave to His followers? Come, Follow me!" Jesus told his disciples.  But what does it mean to be a follower of Jesus?  Today we continue in our series on our identity in Christ by looking at what Scripture shows us about following Jesus.

EASTER- Forgiveness is the Pathway to Relationship
"He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God" (Romans 4:25).  Because of His desire to enjoy a relationship with us, God provided the means of forgiveness  through the work of Christ on the cross.  But forgiveness is not the destination.  It is the pathway to relationship, because Jesus was "raised to life to make us right with God."  Today we celebrate the victory of Jesus over death, which opened the way for us to be right with God, a deep and abiding relationship, for all who would receive Him.

Created in the Image of God- Genesis 1:27
We continue our study in our identity in Christ by looking at what it means to be created in the image of God, specifically, that we are creatures with limits and accountability.  We live in a nation that celebrates freedom and independence, but if that is how we view our relationship to God, we have missed the mark considerably.  As created beings, we are dependent upon and accountable to our Creator; a very healthy and appropriate place to be.

    Obedience- John 14:15

How do you tend to respond when life throws its curve balls at you? Desires, Pain, Doubt, Fear, Pride? Life will give us all kinds of opportunities to make choices.  Our greatest obligation is to love God and love others. However, the expression of that love is most powerfully expressed in our obedience to the will of God.   Obedience has to be the over-riding theme of how we will live.  "If you love me, keep my commands."
